An adventurous mountain bike trip that will get you out of the city and exploring Tierra Bomba, the largest of Cartagena's nearby islands.
The Lowdown.
This 3-km ride across Cartagena’s biggest island will take you off the beaten track through the dry forests that still covers much of the island of Tierra Bomba, so take full advantage of and stop to admire the birds and other wildlife you meet on route.
As well as enjoying the nature trails, you'll see a totally different side of the city including a visit to the impressive maritime fortifications of San Fernando Castle and Angel San Rafael. These resolute fortifications linked by tunnels were the first line of defence against English and French pirates.
In terms of the work out, you decide how tough you want it to be and how much you want to reward yourself on arrival in Bocachica on the other side of the island.
You can choose from a typical lunch at the beach or a gourmet treat at one of our favourite Tierra Bomba beach clubs.
There's also the chance to hop off the bikes, meet the locals and soak up some of the local rhythms on what promises to be a great day out for friends and family.
This isn't the most strenuous of mountain bike rides. In terms of difficulty it probably scores a 5/6 out of 10, but it is only recommended for visitors in good physical shape.
People are advised to dress appropriately and cover up with light-weight gear or apply plenty of sunblock to prevent sunburn.
